The Wind Through The Keyhole by Stephen King

Trust Stephen King to release the most enjoyable book I’ve had the pleasure to read this year.

It was only a year ago that I finished the Dark Tower series and immediately missed the Ka-Tet and the many worlds that King had created.

This novel set between book 4 and 5 allows us a glimpse of Roland and his friends but also introduces a a whole new set of characters.

The Russian Doll approach to the book means we end up with stories within stories within stories, deeper down the rabbit hole we go. The Wind Through The Keyhole is a bit of a love letter to the way we tell stories and their importance.

What makes it such an enjoyable novel is that the stories Roland tells are so wonderful and compelling. I longed to know where things would end for young Billy and then young Tim.

Don’t expect a whole lot of time spent with Eddie and Co but we do learn quite a bit about the young Roland and the ending was somewhat beautiful.

I hope King decides to enter the world of the Dark Tower again and tell some more stories and fairytales. Its such a rich world full of characters you actually care for in a matter of pages it would be a shame to lose it completely.

Favourite Books Read In 2011

Rather than books they actually came out in 2011 because I tend to wait until they are released in paperback.

+ A Song Of Ice & Fire by George R.R. Martin (Books 1 to 5)

Originally I planned to read Game of Thrones only and wait to read each book after each season aired. Inevitably this failed because I became too emotionally involved. I do think there are some issues with the plot in books 4 and 5 in terms of taking too long to move forward but I still really enjoy them.

+ The Dark Tower by Stephen King (Books 1 to 7)

So many feelings about these books, I had always wanted to read them and finally did this year and consumed something like 4000 pages in a month. I just really fell in love with the characters and despite all the crazy fourth wall metaness that happens in later books I personally loved the ending.

+ Horns by Joe Hill

Strange at times messed up novel but one which confirms Hill really is a talented writer (see also the Locke & Key graphic novels)

+ The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman

I’m always a little hit and miss with Gaiman but I really fell in love with this children’s novel.

+ The Manual of Detection by Jedediah Berry

Strange detective story part Inception part Sherlock Holmes

+ Anno Dracula by Kim Newman

One of the best vampire stories I’ve read in ages, been wanting to read it for a long time but it was out of print until now. Funny and enjoyable, can’t wait for the sequels to be reprinted next year.

+ Under The Dome by Stephen King

Favourite King book in years even if the ending fell a little flat the build up and characters make it a worthwhile read if you are a fan.

+ Un Lun Dun by China Miéville

Another children’s book and the same with Miéville his adult books are hit and miss but this fantasy story was great.

+ The Hound of the Baskervilles by Arthur Conan Doyle

Always one of my favourite Holmes stories I finally got around to reading it this year, so great.

Factually inaccurate fancasts that for some reason made sense at the moment:
Aaron Paul as Eddie Dean | (The Dark Tower)

“Well,” Eddie said,’ ‘what was behind Door Number One wasn’t so hot, and what was behind Door Number Two was even worse, so now, instead of quitting like sane people, we’re going to go right on ahead and check out Door Number Three. The way things have been going, I think it’s likely to be something like Godzilla or Ghidra the Three-Headed Monster, but I’m an optimist. I’m still hoping for the stainless steel cookware.”

Oh shit shit shit if they ever happened I would actually die, Eddie is my favourite character and I could see Aaron playing this part so fucking well

I was completely and utterly obsessed with them this year, I think I read like books 2 to 7 in the space of a month which is something like 4000 pages hahaha

I’m already worrying about all the blacklash the series finale/final movie would get though, even though the ending is beautiful and perfect I just know it would be like Lost all over again and the majority of people not understanding its brillance. WHY CAN’T THEY??? Yeah I get very protective of my shows and books.

Just thought about the fourth wall meta appearance of a certain someone would be insane if they went ahead with it. I’m guessing quite a bit would be changed around though.

Note to self: Don’t get too excited until its official!

The Dark Tower cuts $45m from its budget, gets back on track

It’s been a good week for Stephen King fans. First Warner Bros. chooses Ben Affleck to adapt and direct The Stand and now it seems the movie version of The Dark Tower is back on track.

The Dark Tower producer Brian Grazer (Tower Heist) is still busy pitching the project with director Ron Howard and writer Akiva Goldsman and some big changes have added a new lease of life.

We found a way to cut $45m out of the budget without changing the scope and actually giving it a good ending,” Grazer told The Playlist.

The Dark Tower/LOST - Requested by Capn-Trips

This wasn’t easy, but I can’t see another ship than this one: Randall Flagg/MIB.

Technically this could be a LOST/The Stand OTP, but Randall Flagg appears in The Dark Tower too so I think it’s ok? :D
One day I will not suck at making these things!

Give me TWO fandoms in my ask box; I’ll tell you my crossover OTP.

This is so beautiful

enfinpresque replied to your photo: So I finished the Dark Tower series today and life…

A year almost to the day after #Lost ended, too! Epic timing. :( Big hugs to you!

I know it just makes things worse :(
