For those who don’t know Buffy in the S9 comics has discovered she is pregnant the result of a one night stand (I think I’m a little unclear)

Anyway in the issue released this week she finds herself weighing up the options talking to her sister Dawn, to Robin whose own mother was a Slayer when she fell pregnant and then to her former lover and now friend Spike

Yes Buffy actually says she is going to have an abortion now whether this is her final choice is unclear yet and I think she may change her mind later but the fact that this issue has been brought up I think is pretty great.

The Buffy comics may not be on the level of popularity that the show was back in the day but Buffy Summer is still a well known modern icon and back in S8 when her character had a lesbian fling it was reported all over the place. The character is still talked about and having her seriously think through all her options of an unwanted pregnancy is not only a brave thing to do considering the heightened response this subject gets in countries like the US but also a very sensible approach.

No doubt it will provoke rage in certain camps and also thoughtful discussion in others and I’m sure there are people way more articulate than me penning essays right now on the subject but I just wanted to say a few things about one of my favourite characters and about how these kind of issues have to be discussed.
